Hinkley: Jennifer Metheney Killed, Six Seriously Injured in Head-On Collision
At about 1 a.m. on Friday, June 21, 25-year-old Jennifer Metheney, of Porterville, was killed and six people were seriously injured in a head-on collision in Hinkley. A red 1992 Honda Prelude struck the gray 1997 Saturn SL2 in which Metheney was a front seat passenger on Highway 58 west of Flower Road. Emergency responders transported her to an area hospital, where she died from the trauma she suffered a short time later. The 27-year-old female driver of the Saturn and three other passengers, two 9-year-olds and a 6-year-old, were transported to hospitals for injuries ranging from moderate to major. The 20-year-old male driver of the Honda was taken to a hospital to receive treatment for major trauma, as was his 19-year-old male passenger, who sustained moderate injuries. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
“The victims of motor vehicle collisions have recourse through the civil justice system,” explained California car accident attorney James Ballidis. “Those who were injured may seek compensation for recovery-related expenses by filing personal injury claims against the negligent driver. The families of those who did not survive the accident may file wrongful death claims in order to be compensated for their losses.”
San Bernardino County accounted for 221 of the 2,720 traffic-related fatalities that occurred in California in 2010, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety’s accident data. That year, traffic accidents injured 11,764 people in the county. The OTS’ records indicate that 1,072 of the fatal and injury accidents in San Bernardino occurred between 9:00 p.m. and 2:59 a.m.
