Menifee: Rosy Vargas and Selena Monge Killed in DUI Street Racing Crash

At about 11:35 a.m. on Sunday, July 7, 35-year-old Rosy Vargas and 49-year-old Monica Rochin were killed in a DUI street racing crash in Menifee. While racing against a blue SUV in his 2011 Ford Ranger, 38-year-old Noel Mayorga Jr. crashed into a 1994 Lexus sedan at the intersection of Domenigoni Parkway and Leon Road. The pickup struck the Lexus on the driver’s side and drove over it, crushing the front end and peeling away the roof. Vargas and her front seat passenger, Rochin, died at the scene. Three occupants in the backseat, 54-year-old Felipe Rangel, 17-year-old Selena Monge, and 5-year-old Christopher Monge, were transported to area hospitals to receive treatment for moderate to major trauma. Mayorga was also hospitalized for critical injuries. Authorities arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence. The driver of the blue SUV has not been located.

“When a driver breaks the law and seriously or fatally harms others, he or she may face civil claims from the victims or their families in addition to criminal charges,” explained California car accident lawyer James Ballidis.

Throughout Riverside County, 11,417 people were killed or injured in traffic accidents in 2010, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. Alcohol was a factor in 1,471 of the fatal and injury collisions, and speed contributed to 2,573 of the accidents resulting in injury or death.
