Shortly before midnight on Thursday, July 5th, two men were injured in a car accident in northwest Bakersfield. While traveling on Jewetta Avenue, 19-year-old Oliver Cowles lost control of his vehicle near Stockdale Highway. The car rolled over multiple times before colliding with another vehicle, some trees, and a brick wall. Emergency responders extricated Cowles and his 20-year-old passenger, Cody Stapp, from the wreckage and they were transported to the hospital. Authorities suspect that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
“When motor vehicle occupants are injured in a collision, the at-fault driver may be held liable for the cost of the victims’ recovery,” explained California personal injury lawyer James Ballidis, “including for medical bills, lost earnings, and pain and suffering.
The California Office of Traffic Safety reported that 1,343 people were killed or injured in traffic collisions in 2010 in Bakersfield. Comparing the accident statistics of 13 cities with populations of more than 250,000 residents, the agency ranked Bakersfield 11th for traffic safety; 1st place is the worst a city may receive.
