Shortly after 3:30 a.m. on Monday, August 20, 62-year-old passenger Ignacio Hernandez Duran was killed in a DUI crash in Whitewater. While traveling at a high rate of speed on Interstate 10 in a Chevrolet Suburban, 33-year-old Samuel Felix rear-ended a semi truck, the impact causing Hernandez Duran to suffer fatal trauma. Felix sustained severe injuries and was transported to an area hospital, where he was arrested on suspicion of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter. The driver of the semi was not hurt in the accident.
“After a fatal collision involving alcohol, the at-fault driver may face criminal charges and civil lawsuits,” explained California car accident lawyer James Ballidis, “as the state and the family of the victim may hold the driver accountable for his or her actions.”
In Riverside County, motor vehicle collisions claimed the lives of or caused injury to 11,417 people in 2010, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. That year, alcohol was a contributing factor in 1,471 of the fatal and injury collisions that occurred in the county, which ranked 36th out of 56 counties for its incidence of DUI accidents in a rating system in which 1st place is considered the worst.
All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of Ignacio Hernandez Duran, the passenger who was killed in the crash in Whitewater.
