Bakersfield: Quani Pulley and Jared Roberts Killed, Two Seriously Injured in DUI Crash

By

On the morning of Sunday, September 2, a DUI crash killed 4-year-old Quani Pulley and 23-year-old Jared Roberts and injured two others in Bakersfield. While traveling in a 1998 Toyota Camry northbound on State Route 99 at a high rate of speed, 26-year-old Lonnie Haynes failed to negotiate a curve while attempting to exit on California Avenue, causing the vehicle to rollover. Pulley and Roberts were pronounced dead at the scene. Paramedics transported a 5-year-old passenger to an area hospital to receive treatment for major trauma. Haynes sustained moderate injuries and was also hospitalized. Authorities arrested him on two counts of vehicular manslaughter, felony DUI charges, and two counts of child endangerment.

“When passengers are seriously injured in a collision caused by a negligent driver, they may seek compensation from the driver for the expense of their recovery,” explained California car accident attorney James Ballidis. “If their injuries prove fatal, their families may pursue wrongful death claims against the driver.”

Throughout Bakersfield, traffic accidents claimed the lives of or injured 1,343 people in 2010, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. That year, alcohol was a factor in 228 of the fatal and injury collisions that occurred in the city. The OTS ranked Bakersfield 2nd out of 13 cities for DUI crashes in a rating system in which 1st place is the worst.

All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the families of Quani Pulley and Jared Roberts. We would also like to wish a full recovery to the child who was seriously injured.
