Valley Center: Left Turning Car Struck, Seriously Injured Cyclist Scott Edward Folck

By

Shortly after 6 a.m. on Sunday, September 16, a car turning left at a Valley Center intersection struck and seriously injured 35-year-old cyclist Scott Edward Folck. While traveling eastbound on Woods Valley Road at about 35 miles per hour in a Mitsubishi 3000GT, 22-year-old Nicolas Byrd turned left onto Coolwater Ranch Road and into the path of Folck, who was riding westbound at the time. Byrd applied his brakes but was unable to avoid a collision. Emergency responders transported him to an area hospital to receive treatment for major trauma. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

“When a driver causes an accident resulting in injury, the driver may be legally obligated to compensate the victim for expenses associated with his or her recovery,” explained California cycle accident lawyer James Ballidis.

San Diego County accounted for 8 of the 110 fatalities and 897 of the 12,653 injuries suffered by bicyclists in traffic collisions that occurred throughout the state in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. The California Office of Traffic Safety gave San Diego an about average ranking for its incidence of fatal and injury bicycle accidents that year: 25th out of 58 counties.

All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to wish a full recovery to Scott Edward Folck, the cyclist who was struck and seriously injured by the vehicle.
