At about 1:48 p.m. on Monday, November 5, 67-year-old Antun Niksic was killed and two people were seriously injured in a head-on collision in Brentwood. While traveling southbound on Vasco Road in a 1999 Subaru Outback, a 21-year-old man veered into northbound lanes while negotiating a curve in the road, where he collided with the 1998 Mercedes Niksic was driving and then a 1983 Pontiac Trans Am. Firefighters extinguished flames that had ignited in the Subaru and transported the driver to an area hospital for serious head trauma. Emergency responders airlifted a 67-year-old female passenger of the Mercedes to a hospital for treatment of major injuries. The driver of the Trans Am was not hurt. Authorities are investigating the accident.
“When a driver’s negligence causes an accident resulting in serious or fatal trauma, the victims or their families may hold the driver liable for expenses associated with their recoveries or losses,” explained California car accident lawyer James Ballidis.
Brentwood accounted for 3 of the 35 fatalities and 127 of the 3,697 injuries suffered by motor vehicle occupants in Contra Costa County in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. The California Office of Traffic Safety ranked Brentwood 75th out of 103 cities for its incidence of fatal and injury crashes in a rating system in which 1st place is considered the worst.
