At about 12:35 p.m. on Thursday, December 13, 86-year-old Phyllis Fleming, of Sun City, was killed in a DUI crash in Menifee. While turning left from McCall Boulevard onto Encanto Drive on a protected green light, a Saturn sedan was sideswiped by a Chevrolet Tahoe that ran a red light. Fleming, a passenger of the Saturn, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Saturn suffered serious head injuries and was transported to an area hospital. Authorities arrested the driver of the Chevrolet, 37-year-old Melissa Dean-Baumann, of Fallbrook, on suspicion of driving under the influence, manslaughter, and felony child endangerment, as her 3-year-old child was in the vehicle with her at the time of the crash.
“Impaired driving claims thousands of lives and devastates even more families every year in this country,” explained California car accident lawyer James Ballidis, “which is why laws are in place to punish those who choose to drive while under the influence.”
Alcohol-related crashes claimed the lives of 10,228 people in the United States in 2010, accounting for 31 percent of all traffic deaths that year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Alcohol was a contributing factor to 1,471 of the collisions that caused injury or fatality in Riverside County in 2010, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety.
All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of Phyllis Fleming, the passenger who was killed in the DUI crash.
