At about 2 a.m. on Thursday, January 17, 24-year-old Joevanni Vega was killed in a DUI crash in Hesperia. While traveling eastbound on Chestnut Street at a high rate of speed in a 2009 Honda Civic, 25-year-old Tony Martinez Jr. ran a stop sign at Hesperia Road, drove through a guardrail, across a drainage wash, and rolled over onto railroad tracks, the impact ejecting Vega. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency responders airlifted Martinez Jr. to an area hospital to receive treatment for major trauma. Authorities suspect that alcohol contributed to the accident and are investigating.
“When a family loses a loved one in a collision, they may hold the negligent party liable by filing a wrongful death claim,” explained California car accident lawyer James Ballidis.
Motor vehicle accidents claimed the lives of or caused injury to 275 people in Hesperia in 2010, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. Alcohol was a factor in 39 of the fatal and injury collisions that occurred in the city that year, with the OTS ranking Hesperia 40th out of 103 cities with similarly sized populations for its incidence of DUI-related crashes in a rating system in which 1st place is considered the worst.
All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of Joevanni Vega, the passenger killed in the accident. We would also like to wish a full recovery to Tony Martinez Jr.
