Concow: Passengers Tyler Matlock and Kara Hanson Killed in Truck Crash

By

At about 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 20, 24-year-old Tyler Matlock, of Modesto, and 39-year-old Kara Hanson, of Oroville, were killed in a truck crash in Concow. While traveling on a narrow dirt segment of Concow Road in a Ford F-250 pickup truck, 19-year-old Charles Taylor, of Chico, veered from the road near Mountain Pine Lane. The truck rolled 900 feet down a canyon, ejecting all four occupants. Suffering from a broken leg, Taylor and 19-year-old passenger Samuel Montgomery Larson, also of Chico, hiked up to the road to seek help from a passerby. A remote area with no cell phone service, it took emergency responders nearly two hours to arrive. Matlock was killed in the accident. Hanson died from the trauma she suffered before she could be rescued from the canyon. California Highway Patrol officers suspect distraction was a contributing factor and are investigating the crash.

“After a fatal collision, the negligent driver may be held liable for the expense of the victims’ recoveries,” explained California car accident lawyer James Ballidis. “In the event that the victims do not survive their injuries, their families may file wrongful death claims against the driver.”

Throughout Butte County, traffic accidents claimed the lives of 12 passengers and caused injury to another 358 in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. Nationwide, 3,331 people were killed in accidents involving distracted drivers in 2011, an increase from the 3,267 fatalities the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recorded the previous year.

All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the families of Tyler Matlock and Kara Hanson, the passengers who were killed in the truck crash.
