Beverly Hills: BMW Driver Intentionally Struck Bicyclist, Fled

By

Earlier this month, the driver of a white BMW 328i intentionally struck a bicyclist and then fled the scene in Beverly Hills. After an altercation with the driver, whom authorities have described to be a thin, white or Middle Eastern man with dark hair and eyes in his mid-thirties, the driver threatened the cyclist, following him into an alley in the 9000 block of Wilshire Boulevard, and then pinning the rider against a metal trash bin with his vehicle. Emergency responders transported the cyclist to a hospital to receive treatment for the trauma he suffered. Witnesses, or anyone with information concerning the whereabouts of the driver, are asked to call Detective Eric Hyon at 310-285-2156.

“When a driver intentionally harms others, he or she may face criminal charges and civil actions,” explained California bicycle accident lawyer James Ballidis, “as the state will punish the driver for violating its laws and the victims will seek compensation for expenses associated with their recoveries.”

Beverly Hills accounted for none of the 24 fatalities and 25 of the 4,199 injuries suffered by bicyclists in traffic accidents in Los Angeles County in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. The California Office of Traffic Safety compares the accident data of cities with populations of a similar size, giving those with the poorest records the highest rankings, with 1st place being the worst. That year, Beverly Hills ranked 4th out of 93 cities for bicyclist safety.

All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to wish a full recovery to the bicyclist who was struck by the BMW driver.

The Los Angeles Times originally reported this intentional hit-and-run.
