Fullerton: Truck Fatally Struck Cyclist Chelsea Kashergen

By

At about 2:15 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, a truck fatally struck 22-year-old cyclist Chelsea Kashergen in Fullerton. Kashergen was riding eastbound on Nutwood Avenue when a FedEx truck traveling northbound on Ladera Vista Drive turned left onto Nutwood and hit her. She died at the scene. NBC reported that Kashergen appeared to have the right of way. The bicycle accident is under investigation.

“If a motorist’s negligence fatally harms others, the families of the victims may file wrongful death claims in order to hold the motorist liable for their losses,” explained California bicycle accident lawyer James Ballidis.

Cyclists accounted for 52 of the 823 traffic accidents that resulted in injury or death in Fullerton in 2010, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. Statewide, bicyclist fatalities increased 13.2 percent, from 99 in 2010 to 114 in 2011. In 2011, 4,432 bicyclists were killed and 69,000 were injured in the United States, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of Chelsea Kashergen, the cyclist whom the truck fatally struck.

Additional information on the wrongful death claims process is available to the public free of charge through our office.
