Anaheim: Jose Manuel Diaz Cardenas Killed in Collision on I-5

By

At about 9:40 p.m. on Thursday, August 22, 56-year-old Jose Manuel Diaz Cardenas was killed in a collision on the I-5 in Anaheim. While traveling southbound in a 2002 Toyota Sequoia, Cardenas pulled off to the side of the freeway near the State College Boulevard exit after his right-rear tire failed. Cardenas was sitting on the back bumper while a 16-year-old boy attempted to change the tire when a 1994 Lexus sedan struck them. Cardenas was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency responders transported the 16-year-old and the 20-year-old male driver of the Lexus to an area hospital to receive treatment for trauma ranging from moderate to major. A 13-year-old girl and an 11-year-old girl who had been sitting in the SUV suffered minor injuries and were also taken to a hospital. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

“When a collision results in injury or death, the victims or their families have recourse through the civil justice system,” commented an auto accident lawyer in Orange County, “and may be compensated for expenses associated with their recoveries or losses.”

Throughout Anaheim, traffic collisions claimed the lives of or caused injury to 2,299 people in 2010, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. The OTS ranked Anaheim 3rd out of 13 cities with populations of more than 250,000 for its incidence of fatal and injury crashes that year; 1st place is the worst possible ranking. Statewide, 2,720 people were killed in traffic accidents.

All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of Jose Manuel Diaz Cardenas, the man killed in the collision on the I-5. We would also like to wish a full recovery to those who were injured in the crash.
