At about 11:30 a.m. on Friday, August 23, 53-year-old Alejandro Bravo and 50-year-old Juan Jose Luna Castro were killed in a hit-and-run accident in Santa Ana. While traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on Cabrillo Park Drive in an Audi, 21-year-old Jorge Ocampo ran a stop sign and broadsided the Nissan Sentra Bravo was driving at East Fruit Street. The impact caused both vehicles to spin out, sending them about 30 feet from the intersection. Bravo was declared dead at the scene. Emergency responders transported Castro to an area hospital, where he died a short time later. Ocampo, a documented gang member, initially fled the scene but later turned himself into police.
“Once the driver responsible for a fatal hit-and-run crash has been apprehended, the families of the victims may then seek compensation for their losses by filing wrongful death claims against the driver,” explained an auto accident attorney in Orange County.
In 2010, 1,621 people were killed or injured in traffic accidents that occurred in Santa Ana, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety’s most current statistics. Hit-and-run was a factor in 187 of the fatal and injury collisions that occurred in Santa Ana that year, with the OTS ranking the city 5th out of 13 cities for its incidence of such accidents in a rating system in which 1st place is considered the worst.
