Shortly before 1 p.m. on Friday, August 16, a motorist struck and seriously injured two pedestrians in a parking garage in Santa Monica. While attempting to reverse her vehicle after driving past a ticket booth in a parking garage in the 1500 block of 4th Street, a female motorist accidently allowed the car to roll forward; when she attempted to apply the break, she stepped on the accelerator, sending the vehicle into a 67-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman who were standing in front of an elevator. The vehicle pinned the victims against the elevator, causing them to suffer major trauma to their legs. The woman also sustained a head injury. Authorities are investigating the accident and have requested that anyone with information about the crash contact Santa Monica police investigator Jason Olson at 310-458-8954 or Sgt. Phillbo Rubish at 310-458-8950.
“When a motorist’s negligence causes an accident that harms others, the motorist may be held liable for the expense of the victims’ recoveries,” explained California pedestrian accident lawyer James Ballidis, “such as for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.”
Santa Monica accounted for 1 of the 198 fatalities and 96 of the 4,786 injuries pedestrians suffered in traffic accidents that occurred in Los Angeles County in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. The California Office of Traffic Safety ranked Santa Monica 1st out of 103 cities of a similar size for its incidence of fatal and injury pedestrian accidents in a rating system in which 1st place is considered the worst.
All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to wish a full recovery to the two pedestrians who were struck and seriously injured in the parking garage.
