Moreno Valley: Vehicle Struck, Killed Cyclist Tracy Gage

At about 3:40 p.m. on Thursday, September 12, a vehicle struck and killed 56-year-old cyclist Tracy Gage in Moreno Valley, reported The Press-Enterprise. While traveling northbound on Perris Boulevard in a blue Toyota Corolla, 19-year-old Steven Gomez struck Gage, who was also traveling north, from behind near Northern Dancer Drive. Gage suffered major trauma and was declared dead at the scene. Authorities are investigating the accident; however, they do not suspect that drugs or alcohol were a factor. Witnesses are asked to call the Moreno Valley Police Department Traffic Division at 951-486-6900 during business hours or 951-766-1099 over the weekend or after hours.

Traffic accidents claimed the lives of or caused injury to 31 bicyclists in Moreno Valley in 2010, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. The OTS ranked Moreno Valley 40th out of 53 similarly sized cities for its incidence of fatal and injury bicycle crashes in a rating system in which 1st place is considered the worst. Statewide, cyclist fatalities increased 13.2 percent from 99 in 2010 to 114 in 2011.
