By

At about 4:20 p.m. on Tuesday, September 10, 21-year-old Ana Calderon, of Santa Barbara, was killed in a suspected DUI crash north of Ventura,Ventura. While traveling northbound on Highway 101, 18-year-old Zachary Wallace, of Thousand Oaks, made an unsafe turning movement and lost control of the vehicle, causing it to strike a curb, which sent it into the air and caused it to overturn. Calderon, a passenger in his vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities arrested Wallace, who suffered minor injuries, on suspicion of felony DUI resulting in injuries. He could face more charges once the investigation into the accident is completed.

Throughout Ventura, traffic collisions claimed the lives of or caused injury to 391 people in 2010, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. Alcohol was a contributing factor to 47 of the fatal and injury accidents, with Ventura ranking 19th out of 53 cities of a similar size for its incidence of DUI crashes in an OTS rating system in which 1st place is considered the worst.
