By

Shortly after 10 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, 47-year-old Elisa Alvarez, of Santa Monica, was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Inglewood, reported the Los Angeles Times. Alvarez had just left a family birthday party and placed a child in the safety seat of a parked car when a pickup truck hit her and fled the scene. The impact threw her 30 feet into the air. Emergency responders transported her to a hospital, where she was declared dead. News coverage assisted police in identifying the driver, 38-year-old Jesus Cazares. Cazares turned himself in and was booked at city jail on felony hit-and-run charges. As the investigation continues, he may face more charges.

Throughout Los Angeles County, traffic accidents claimed the lives of 568 people and caused injury to 71,866 in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. Inglewood accounted for 3 of the 198 fatalities and 5 of the 4,786 injuries pedestrians suffered in traffic accidents in the county that year. Hit-and-run was a factor in 5,962 of the accidents that resulted in injury or death in the county, with Los Angeles ranking the 2nd worst in the state for such accidents compared to other counties.

Under California law, when a family loses a loved one to a traffic accident, they may file a wrongful death claim against the negligent driver in order to hold that person liable for their loss.
