Shortly before 6 p.m. on Sunday, December 1, 73-year-old Jeremias Bergus Ignacio, of Los Angeles, was struck and fatally injured in a crosswalk in Glassell Park, reported the Los Angeles Times. The accident occurred on Avenue 41 at Eagle Rock Boulevard. Emergency responders transported Ignacio to an area hospital to receive treatment for severe trauma. He succumbed to his injuries there. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene. Authorities are investigating the accident.
Throughout Los Angeles County, traffic accidents claimed the lives of or caused injury to 4,962 pedestrians in 2010, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety’s most current records. Pedestrians aged 65 and older accounted for 544 of those who were seriously or fatally injured. The OTS ranked Los Angeles 2nd out of 58 counties for its incidence of fatal and injury pedestrian accidents in a rating system in which 1st place is considered the worst.
