On the afternoon of Wednesday, April 17, 22-year-old Jennifer Chacon Johnson and 24-year-old Peter Benjamin Fotu were seriously injured in a crash in Barstow. While traveling southbound on J Street in a red Ford Focus, Johnson failed to obey a stop sign at the intersection with Rimrock Road and was struck by a silver Ford Expedition heading westbound on Rimrock. The impact caused the Focus to spin out into the eastbound lane of Rimrock, where it was hit by the maroon Chevy Silverado Fotu was driving. Johnson and Fotu suffered major trauma and were airlifted to area hospitals. The driver of the Expedition, 55-year-old John Francis Weber, complained of wrist pain but declined medical attention. The accident is under investigation.
“California law ensures that those who have been injured in auto collisions have recourse through the civil justice system,” explained California car accident lawyer James Ballidis. “Accident victims may file personal injury claims against the negligent party in order to obtain compensation for the cost of their recoveries.”
Barstow accounted for 4 of the 180 fatalities and 104 of the 11,050 injuries suffered by motorists in collisions that occurred in San Bernardino County in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. Traffic signs and signals were a primary collision factor in 112 of the fatal and 12,799 of the injury crashes that occurred in the state that year.
