At about 2 a.m. on Friday, October 4, two people were seriously injured in a semi crash on I-40 in Daggett. The big rig, which was hauling 24,000 pounds of frozen chicken, was traveling westbound in the No. 2 lane when it veered from the road, entered the center median, and overturned about 13 miles east of Barstow. Emergency responders transported the two occupants of the semi to local hospitals to receive treatment for major trauma. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
Throughout San Bernardino County, 11,866 people were killed or injured in motor vehicle collisions in 2010, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety’s most current records. Large trucks were involved in 24 of the crashes that resulted in death and 425 of the collisions that caused injury. Nighttime accidents-those occurring between 9 p.m. and 2:59 a.m.-accounted for 1,072 of the fatalities and injuries.
