Encinitas: Joao Rocadas Killed, Four Injured in Head-On Collision

At about 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, 23-year-old Joao Rocadas was killed and four people were injured in a head-on collision in Encinitas. While traveling on Leucadia Boulevard in a Chrysler Sebring, Rocadas lost control of the vehicle near Interstate 5, crossing the median before crashing into a Chevrolet pickup truck. The impact sent the truck into a Ford F-250 truck. Rocadas was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency responders transported the 43-year-old female driver of the Chevrolet to an area hospital to receive treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. The 43-year-old man driving the Ford and his sons, ages 12 and 9, were treated at the scene. Witnesses, or anyone with information about the accident, are asked to call the Sheriff’s Department of the San Diego Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.

“Those who suffer serious trauma in a crash may file civil claims against the negligent party in order to receive compensation for recovery-related expenses,” explained California car accident attorney James Ballidis. “If the collision proves fatal, the family of the victim may file a wrongful death claim.”

Traffic accidents claimed the lives of or caused injury to 176 people in Encinitas in 2010, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. Eight of the fatal and injury collisions in the city involved drivers aged 21 to 34 that year. Statewide, 2,720 people died in crashes.

All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of Joao Rocadas, the driver killed in the head-on collision. We would also like to wish a full recovery to the four people who were injured.

The Los Angeles Times originally reported this Encinitas crash.
