Hawthorne: Two Killed, One Critically Injured in Semi Crash

At about 2:50 a.m. on Friday, June 28, two people were killed and another was seriously injured in a semi crash in Hawthorne. While traveling southbound on the 405 Freeway, the semi struck a disabled vehicle near the Rosecrans off-ramp, the impact causing the truck to jackknife. Both occupants of the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency responders transported the driver of the semi to the hospital to receive treatment for major trauma. The crash is under investigation.

“Collisions between semi trucks and passenger vehicles are more likely to result in major damage and serious or fatal injury due to the great discrepancy in the size and weight of the vehicles,” explained California truck accident lawyer James Ballidis. “In such cases, the victims or their surviving family members may file civil claims against the at-fault party in order to obtain compensation for the expenses related to their recoveries or losses.”

Hawthorne accounted for 1 of the 346 fatalities and 430 of the 62,881 injuries suffered in crashes that occurred in Los Angeles County in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. Large trucks were involved in 47 of the fatal and 1,535 of the injury accidents that occurred in the county that year.

All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis & Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the families of the two people who were killed in the semi crash. We would also like to wish a full recovery to the truck driver who was critically injured.
