At about 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4, a vehicle struck and killed a man in a wheelchair in Indio. The accident occurred at the intersection of Dr. Carreon Boulevard and Monroe Street. Emergency responders transported the victim, who was reported to be a 57-year-old Hispanic man, to an area hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities. The accident is under investigation.
“When a pedestrian is killed in an accident, his or her family may hold the at-fault party liable for their loss,” explained California injury lawyer James Ballidis. “In many cases, the family will file a wrongful death claim.”
Fifteen pedestrians lost their lives or were injured in traffic accidents that occurred in Indio in 2010, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. Indio ranked 71st out of 103 cities with populations of a similar size for the number of fatal and injury pedestrian accidents that occurred there in a rating system in which 1st place is considered the worst. Statewide, pedestrian fatalities increased 3.9 percent from 601 in 2010 to 625 in 2011.
