Shortly before 5:30 p.m. on Friday, December 14, a vehicle struck and injured 15-year-old skateboarder Terry Likens in Marysville. Diana Barton hit Likens with her Hyundai Elantra as he skated westbound along North Beale Road near Yuba College. He suffered major internal trauma and was taken to an area hospital. Barton indicated to police that she sometimes encounters difficulty seeing clearly while driving at night. Authorities do not believe that drugs or alcohol contributed to the accident and are investigating.
“When a driver strikes and injures a pedestrian, cyclist, or skateboarder and is found to be at-fault for the accident, the driver may be held liable for the expense of the victim’s recovery,” explained California personal injury lawyer James Ballidis, “such as for medical bills, lost earnings, and pain and suffering.”
Marysville accounted for 2 of the 13 fatalities and 79 of the 439 injuries suffered in traffic accidents in Yuba County in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. The California Office of Traffic Safety ranked Yuba 27th out of 58 counties for the number of fatal and injury accidents that occurred there that year-an about average ranking considering that 1st place is considered the worst.
All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to wish a full recovery to Terry Likens, the teen skateboarder who was struck and injured.
