Nevada: Genaro Fernandez, Raudel Fernandez-Avila, Belen Fernandez, Leonardo Fernandez-Avila, and Angela Sandoval Killed in Collision with Drunk Driver

Shortly before 3 a.m. on Saturday, March 30, five people from Southern California were killed and two others were seriously injured in a collision with a suspected drunk driver in Nevada. Eighteen-year-old Jean Soriano was traveling on Interstate 15 in a Dodge Durango when he rear-ended a Chevy Astro van, the impact causing it to spin around and roll over. Genaro Fernandez, 41, Raudel Fernandez-Avila, 49, Belen Fernandez, 53, Leonardo Fernandez-Avila, 45, and Angela Sandoval, 13, all occupants of the van, suffered fatal trauma. Emergency responders transported two other occupants of the van to a hospital to receive treatment for major injuries. Soriano was also taken to a hospital and, upon his release, arrested on seven counts of driving under the influence, driving without a license, and failing to reduce speed.

“After a fatal collision, the families of the victims may file wrongful death claims against the negligent driver in order to hold him or her liable for their losses,” explained California car accident attorney James Ballidis.

Nationwide, 32,367 people were killed in motor vehicle accidents in 2011, 1.9 percent fewer than the 32,999 people who lost their lives in 2010, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The number of alcohol-related traffic deaths declined 2.5 percent in 2011, with the NHTSA recording 9,878 fatalities, accounting for 31 percent of overall traffic fatalities.
