Northridge: Suspected Drunk Driver Caused Fatal Crash

Shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Monday, June 25th, a suspected drunk driver caused a fatal crash in Northridge. While traveling eastbound on Parthenia Street in a Ford Explorer, a 50-year-old woman veered into the opposing lane of traffic, striking a westbound Honda Civic, the impact shearing off the vehicle’s right side. The 18-year-old driver of the Honda sustained minor injuries; his 25-year-old sister, who was sitting in the front passenger seat at the time of the collision, was killed. Paramedics transported both drivers to the hospital, their injuries ranging from minor to moderate. The woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

“Individuals who cause serious or fatal harm to others while violating traffic safety laws often face criminal charges from the state and civil actions from the victims,” explained California car accident lawyer James Ballidis. “In many cases, the victims will file a personal injury claim to receive compensation for the cost of their recovery, or the family of the victim will pursue a wrongful death claim for their loss.”

Every day in the United States, traffic collisions in which alcohol was a contributing factor claim an estimated 30 lives. In 2009, there were 10,839 alcohol-related deaths, accounting for nearly 32 percent of all traffic fatalities, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That year, 924 people lost their lives in DUI crashes in California.

All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of the woman who was killed in the collision the suspected drunk driver caused.

The Los Angeles Times originally reported this fatal Northridge crash.
