At about 3 a.m. on Monday, April 1, 38-year-old Maria Guadalupe Vargas Lopez was killed in a collision with a suicidal driver in San Marcos. Forty-eight-year-old Yi Liu intentionally drove the wrong direction on Highway 78, crashing her 1997 Nissan Maxima head-on into the 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Vargas Lopez was driving. Both women were taken to an area hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The accident is under investigation.
“When a family loses a loved one to a motor vehicle collision, they may file a wrongful death claim against the negligent driver in order to be compensated for their loss,” explained California car accident attorney James Ballidis.
Motor vehicle accidents claimed the lives of or caused injury to 208 people in San Marcos in 2010, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. Twenty-two of the crashes that resulted in injury or death occurred between 9 p.m. and 2:59 a.m., with San Marcos ranking 61st out of 103 cities with similarly sized populations for its incidence of nighttime collisions; 1st place is the worst possible ranking.
