Santa Monica: One Killed, Three Seriously Injured in Collision with Wrong-Way Driver

At about 1:15 a.m. on Friday, June 28, one person was killed and three were seriously injured in a collision with a wrong-way driver in Santa Monica. While traveling eastbound on the westbound 10 Freeway, a motorist crashed head-on with another vehicle near Centinela Avenue. The impact sent the first motorist down an embankment, and left the second on the freeway, where it was struck by another motorist, killing one of its male occupants. Emergency responders transported three people to the hospital to receive treatment for major trauma. Two people declined medical treatment. Authorities arrested the wrong-way driver and the driver of the third vehicle involved in the crash on suspicion of driving under the influence. The accident is under investigation.

“Drivers who seriously or fatally harm others while violating the law may face criminal and civil legal actions,” explained California car accident attorney James Ballidis. “The state will penalize them with license suspensions and fines or imprisonment, or both. The victims or their surviving family members will file injury or wrongful death claims against the driver in order to be compensated for the expenses associated with their recoveries or losses.”

Santa Monica accounted for none of the 346 fatalities and 679 of the 62,881 injuries suffered in motor vehicle collisions that occurred in Los Angeles County in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. Alcohol was a contributing factor to 197 of the fatal and 4,359 of the injury accidents that occurred in the county that year.

All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis & Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of the man who was killed in the collision with the wrong-way driver. We would also like to wish a full recovery to the three people who were seriously injured.
