Santa Nella: Fernando Mardones and Maria Loreto Loyola Killed, Fernando O. Mardones and Loreto A. Godoy Injured in Head-On Collision

At about 4:30 p.m. on Friday, June 21, 62-year-old Fernando Mardones, 61-year-old Maria Loreto Loyola, and another motorist were killed in a head-on collision near Santa Nella. Mardones’ son, 36-year-old Fernando O. Mardones, and his son’s wife, 32-year-old Loreto A. Godoy, as well as the couple’s two children, were injured in the crash. While traveling on Interstate 5, a 29-year-old male driver crossed the center median and crashed into the vehicle in which the family was riding. The younger Mardones, his wife, and their children were taken to the hospital for their injuries. The accident is under investigation.

“After a fatal accident, the victims’ surviving family members may file wrongful death claims against the negligent driver in order to hold that party liable for their losses,” explained California car accident lawyer James Ballidis.

Throughout Merced County, 1,816 people were killed or injured in traffic accidents that occurred in 2010, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety’s most current records. The OTS ranked Merced 16th out of 58 counties for its incidence of fatal and injury collisions in a rating system in which 1st place is considered the worst.
