South Gate: Vanessa Segarra Killed, Four Injured in 710 Freeway Accident

At about 1:17 a.m. on Monday, April 16th, 28-year-old Vanessa Segarra was killed and four people were injured in an accident on the 710 Freeway in South Gate. While traveling northbound, Segarra’s Honda Accord crashed with a Dodge Nitro SUV between Imperial Highway and Firestone Boulevard. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Paramedics transported three of the injured to nearby hospitals, while a fourth person received treatment at the site of the accident. The freeway was closed for more than three hours as authorities investigated.

“The formal investigation into a fatal crash can take several weeks,” explained a California personal injury lawyer, “which can be frustrating for family members seeking information about what happened to their loved one.”

South Gate accounted for none of the 390 fatalities and 311 of the 64,178 injuries suffered by motor vehicle occupants in traffic accidents in Los Angeles County in 2009, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. Compared to 103 cities with populations ranging from 50,001 to 100,000, South Gate ranked 40th, a California Office of Traffic Safety placement that would be considered slightly below average.

All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of Vanessa Segarra, the driver who was killed in the accident on the 710 Freeway. We would also like to wish a full recovery to the four people who were injured.

The Los Angeles Daily News originally reported this South Gate crash.
