At about 1:22 a.m. on Thursday, October 17, a 28-year-old man from Van Nuys suffered major trauma in a DUI crash in Yermo, reported the Desert Dispatch. While traveling northbound on Interstate 15 in a 1973 Volkswagen Bug, 31-year-old Christopher Swindle, of Las Vegas, made what a California Highway Patrol officer described as “unsafe turning movements” and lost control of the vehicle south of Yermo Road, causing it to rollover. The Van Nuys man, a passenger, sustained serious injuries. Swindle, who was not hurt, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Authorities are investigating the accident.
Passengers accounted for 59 of the 180 fatalities and 4,056 of the 11,050 injuries suffered in motor vehicle accidents that occurred in San Bernardino County in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. Alcohol was a contributing factor to 1,351 of the collisions that resulted in injury or death in the county that year, with San Bernardino ranking 39th out of 58 counties for its incidence of DUI crashes in a rating system in which 1st place is considered the worst.
